Presteigne St Andrews went down 2-1 in their Spar Mid Wales League match against visiting Llanrhaeadr at Llanandras Park on Saturday 21 November.
In a game played in appalling conditions, both sides deserve credit for trying to make a decent game of it, with Presteigne probably ultimately paying the price for at times trying to play too much intricate stuff on a day that was not suited to it.
Llanrhaeadr took a first-half lead when a long ball from their left back left their centre-forward one-on-one with Trevor Gummer in the home team goal and the Llanrhaeadr man profited for his persistence.
Presteigne’s equaliser came when Joel Layton’s ball in from the left was glanced home by the head of Joel Leversedge, but Llanrhaeadr won in the the second half with a similar ball in from the left and a close-range header.
Both sides had other chances to score, but the conditions ultimately had the final say – although to his credit, Gwilym Lewis reffed it sensibly making allowances for the swamp.
The Reserves were twice in front on their Mid Wales League (South) match at Newcastle but in the end they had to settle for a point from a 2-2 draw. Danny Ives and Tom Watkins were on target for Barry Williams’ side.
Congratulations to CP Llanandras who finally have their first win of the Mid Wales League (South) season when a Tom Hooper strike and two late goals from Merv Stephens saw them through to a 3-0 home victory over Penybont Athletic.
CP Llanandras’ scheduled Alfred Sparey Cup first-round tie against Leominster Town Reserves on Sunday 22 November has been postponed due to the state of the John Beddoes School field.
