Round up of the weekend action

free_kickIn the Spar Mid Wales League, Aberystyth Reserves took advantage of their fellow top sides being on League Cup duty to register their first win in eight games as they saw off visiting Dolgellau 3-1, and so they move level on points with the leaders Llansantffraid Village.  Aber have, though, played two more matches than the leaders.

Llanrhaeadr would have been looking to close the gap on the top teams, but Penparcau were never likely to be a pushover and the game ended all square at 2-2.

At the foot of the table, Llanfyllin Town were the big winners – they hammered fellow strugglers Caersws Reserves 6-1, while Aberystwyth University continue to climb away from trouble after a 2-1 win at bottom side Newbridge.

Llansantffraid Village are into the last four of the League Cup, but they had to rely on a penalty shoot-out to get past their quarter-final hosts Carno after the game finished 1-1 after extra time.

The surprise of the day came at Rhayader Town where Dyffryn Banw were 2-1 victors, while Bow Street are also into the last four – they beat Tywyn Bryncrug 2-1 at home.

In the Mid Wales League (South) Rhosgoch Rangers have opened up a five-point lead at the top – they buried visiting Newbridge Reserves 8-2, while, in the game of the day, Llandrindod Wells went down 2-0 at Builth Wells, who leap-frog them into second spot.   Builth have three games in hand over Rhosgoch, so will fancy their chances of overhauling them.

With the Presteigne Reserves and Hay St Marys Reserves both on Emrys Morgan Cup duty, Talgarth Town took the chance to close the gap with a 5-0 win at Llandrindod Wells Colts, while there was no shortage of goals at Radnor Valley, where the home side drew 4-4 with Builth Wednesdays.

Elsewhere, Talgarth Rovers climbed above Newcastle into eighth spot after a 2-1 home win over the south Shropshire club.

In the Emrys Morgan Cup, Penybont United were finally able to get their second-round tie played and they came through 4-1 against visiting Llansantffraid Village Reserves.   In the third round,  Hay St Marys Reserves came unstuck at home against Maesglas, who ran out 5-0 victors.
