The Penybont goal under pressure during the Reserves 1-0 win

Presteigne Reserves maintained their recent excellent form with a 1-0 home win over Penybont United in a Mid Wales League (South) match at Llanandras Park on Tuesday 15 December.

The only goal of the game came in the second half when Danny Ives fired home following a left-wing corner.

Steve Kay followed it in, but the general concensus from our gathering next to the stand was that the ball was probably already in before Steve got his touch, but we stand to be corrected on that.

An even first half saw few chances on goal with Presteigne coming closest from a header from a right-wing corner and Trevor Gummer in the home-team goal dealing comfortably with a couple of efforts straight at him.

Presteigne might have gone in front in the first couple of minutes of the second half when good link-up play between Danny Ives and John Bird down the left led to a decent cross picking out Ryan Sparey, but he fired over the bar when well placed.

Penybont United were what Penybont sides usually are – decent, solid and pretty well organised and they belied their league position in the bottom half of the table to play some nice football at times, without seriously threatening to break through.

A more detailed report will appear on the site tomorrow – on the Reserves page – but well done to Barry and his side who keep marching on.  By my reckoning, this win takes them back up to fourth in the Mid Wales League (South) table level on points with both Builth Wells and Llandrindod Wells, although Builth do have a game in hand.
