After yet another weekend in which not a single game was played in either the Mid Wales League, Emrys Morgan Cup or Mid Wales League (South), the scale of the fixture backlog is starting to look serious.
A calculation based on the BBC Wales website (I know, I need to get out more..) shows that since 15 December, 21 matches have been called off in the Spar Mid Wales League and League Cup.
Presteigne St Andrews’ 1-0 win at Hay St Marys is one of only three games to have been played in that period, so fair play to Hay for having the nous to switch the game to their second pitch.
The other two matches played were also on Boxing Day at Penparcau and Tywyn Bryncrug – both on the coast, where conditions could perhaps be expected to be milder.
The picture in the Mid Wales League (South) and Emrys Morgan Cup is even more grim. In the same period 31 games have been called off, with the Penybont derby on Boxing Day the only match to beat the freeze.
Already there is talk of clubs having to play on both Saturdays and Sundays in order to catch up, although this is yet to be confirmed. By the time you add in various cup ties that still have to be played, the last couple of months of the season are threatening to be especially busy and the forecast is not looking great for the weekend, either.
