First team go down to heavy home defeat

No joy for either side this weekend

A day to forget for the first team

Presteigne St Andrews FC’s recent upturn in fortunes suffered a serious setback on Saturday, 12 March when they were beaten 7-0 at home by Kerry in their Spar Mid Wales League, second-division match.

In all honesty, this is a case of ‘least said, soonest mended’ as Kerry demonstrated just why they are chasing promotion this season.

It will be a case of the first-team squad licking its wounds and putting this one behind them as quickly as possible.

But that is to take nothing away from Kerry who, by all accounts, looked a good side at this level and who won’t be far away come the promotion shake up.

Presteigne were arguably in the game until half-time but the second half showing was well below what is needed to be competitive at this level.

A word for the referee – Joe Lewis – whom I’m advised had a very good game with one Presteigne player going as far to tell me he was ‘excellent – the best we’ve had this season’.

We are quick enough to give them stick when they are not so good, so it’s only fair we give credit where it is due.

After a day such as Saturday, inevitably we all look for the results of those in and around us towards the foot of the table and the only good thing to have come up of the day was that most of our rivals were also beaten.

The only side in the bottom six to pick up points were Dyffryn Banw who were 2-1 winners at fellow strugglers, Bont, so something had to give there.

So, it will be on to Saturday, 19 March and a home game against Churchstoke – a preview of that game will be posted later in the week.
