…yes, we did actually see the return of local football this weekend after the recent wintry conditions – and not before time!
If you wanted to catch a game in the Spar Mid Wales League on Saturday 16 January, then the message would have been ‘go west’ as most of the matches played were in Ceredigion or on the coast.
In the top-of-the-table clash at Aberystwyth Reserves, the home side ran out convincing 5-0 winners over Rhayader Town – a result that takes Aber three points clear at the top as the previous leaders Llansantffraid didn’t play as their game at Caersws was one of four postponements.
Aber have played three games more than Llansantffraid, but they will be reflecting on what was a good day all round for them. In addition to their win over Rhayader, another of their title rivals lost as fourth-placed Tywyn Bryncrug were beaten 3-2 at home to Penparcau.
‘Arky are up to third as a result of that win, while Bow Street climb to fifth after they saw off Waterloo Rovers 4-0 at home. In the day’s other game, Hay St Marys defied the odds to get their home match on, but their hard work came to nought as Dyffryn Banw left Hay with all three points courtesy of a 3-1 win.
In addition to the matches at Llanandras Park and Caersws, the Carno-Dolgellau and Llanrhaeadr-Newtown Reserves games were also called off.
Only one game survived in the Mid Wales League (South) and that saw Talgarth Town beat visiting Knighton Town 4-3 – a result that sees Talgarth climb above Hay St Marys Reserves into fifth spot in the table.
