Review of the weekend action…

free_kickAberystwyth Reserves were the big winners in the Spar Mid Wales League at the weekend – and they didn’t even kick a ball in anger.By now we all know Llansantffraid were put to the sword by the first team’s excellent 7-1 win, but Penparcau also missed out when they were beaten 3-0 at Waterloo Rovers.

Tywyn Bryncrug, Bow Street and Rhayader Town all cut Aber’s lead to two points as all three won their home games. Tywyn edged out Llanrhaeadr 2-1, while Bow Street were 3-1 winners over Llanfyllin Town. Rhayader Town helped their goal difference as they thumped struggling Caersws Reserves 6-0.

Elsewhere, Hay St Marys slipped to a 1-0 home defeat against Carno while Newtown Reserves were way too strong for Dolgellau as the ran out 5-0 winners at Latham Park. Aberystwyth University maintained their pull away from the foot of the division with a 4-1 home win over the bottom side Newbridge.

A number of Spar Mid Wales League (South) clubs were on Emrys Morgan Club duty – including Presteigne Reserves – and it could be argued the performance of the day was that of Llandrindod Wells who beat visiting Llanidloes Town 2-0 in their fourth-round tie. Llani had headed to Llan’dod top of the Montgomeryshire Amateur League with 13 wins from 13 games, so fair play to Llandrindod – that was clearly a very decent result.

Talgarth Rovers are also through to the fifth round – they saw off visiting Felinfach 3-2 with the winner reportedly coming about ten seconds from time – good time to score!

In the Mid Wales League (South) Rhosgoch Rangers took advantage of their title rivals’ cup commitments or inactivity to stretch their lead at the top to six points with a 3-0 win over visiting Penybont United.

Talgarth Town’s Gavin Perry netted the only goal of the day at CP Llanandras with a penalty after around half an hour and that was enough to take his side up to second spot.

Hay St Marys Reserves are up to third place courtesy of their 7-2 win at Newbridge Reserves while Knighton Town were also amongst the goals – they beat visiting Llandrindod Wells Colts 5-0 at Bryn-y-Castell.

Elsewhere, there were wins for Newcastle – 4-1 at home to Sennybridge – and Rhayader Town Reserves, who came away from Radnor Valley with a 3-1 victory. Talgarth Rovers are due back in action on Sunday 24 January when they will host bottom side St Harmon.

They were without a league fixture, and so it was a chance for either Llansantffraid Village or Penparcau to assume pole position at the top of the league, but both failed to take advantage.
