Presteigne St Andrews Under 18s made their long-awaited return to HFA Floodlit Youth League action on Thursday 28 January, and they marked that return in style with a 6-1 win at Westfields.
The first meeting at Llanandras Park back in September was a tight affair, but there were to be no such problems at Moor House as Trevor Gummer’s side opened up a four-goal half-time lead.
Nick Evans scored twice in that first half, with Conor Bird and Callum Matthews also on target. Taran Lewis scored early in the second half to ensure there was no loss of momentum, while Callum then popped up to score his second and Presteigne’s sixth goal.
Westfields’ only reward for their efforts was a late penalty – somewhat harshly in the view of Trevor – for a handball.
Trevor admitted this has not been a vintage performance in footballing terms, but he felt they had got it tactically right on the night.
“We chopped and changed things around a bit and, although it was probably the worst game we have played in a while, it paid off,” he said.
“Joe Prosser had a cracking game in goal and he made a number of good saves.
“But, all in all, it was a great effort by the boys and hopefully it will give us the spur to push on over the rest of the season,” he added.
A full match report will appear on the Under 18s page of the site at some stage on Friday 29 January.
