Presteigne Reserves put up a good showing in the Mid Wales League (South) Summer Cup final played at Llanidloes Town FC on Friday, 17 August.
This was the traditional season curtain-raiser which, this year, was played between the league runners-up in Llanidloes Town Reserves and the League Cup final runners-up in Presteigne Reserves.
Both competitions were won last season by Rhayader Town who have now moved on into the MMP with Norman Powell League division two, so they were ineligible to play.
The Reserves’ joint-manager Mark Weiland felt his side had put up a decent showing in this one against a Llanidloes side that’s always a tough proposition – especially on their own ground.
“We went 1-0 down 15 minutes into the game but we equalised five minutes later after some good build up play,” said Mark.
“Tom Lewis beat two players and scored with a neat finish.
“Llani then scored after a break from a corner and a decent finish in off the post.
“Again, we equalised – this time after more good build up play that led to Billy Hyett opened his account for the club with a good finish.
“In an eventful first half, Llani then scored from another break away from a corner.
“We dominated the second half and played some really good football.
“Liam Tomkins pulled one back after a corner fell to him and he drove the ball back into the net.
“Nigel Duggan had a chance in the final minute but his header went wide.
“It was a really encouraging performance and it felt strange after the game to think we lost it as we played really well.
“Hopefully we can put the same level of performance in at Hay on Friday night.”
