While Presteigne St Andrews were involved in an entertaining but ultimately fruitless 1-0 defeat at Aberystwyth University events elsewhere led to us having new leaders of the Spar Mid Wales League.
Pre-match leaders Aberystwyth Reserves again underlined their ability to blow hot and cold – top of the table they might have been, but they were well beaten 4-0 in their game at Llanrhaeadr. That result proved costly as Aber ended the day dropping to fifth place in the table.
Tywyn Bryncrug take over pole position after they were 2-1 winners at Waterloo Rovers, while Bow Street needed a last-gasp goal to snatch a win at struggling Caersws Reserves but they are now second. Rhayader Town are third as they did their goal difference no harm at all by winning 5-0 at Llanfyllin Town.
Llansantffraid Village served notice last weekend’s 7-1 home defeat by Presteigne was only a blip – they also got the goal difference back on track with a 8-0 home win over managerless Dolgellau.
Newbridge looked on course to take a point from their home game against Carno – it was goal-less after 70 minutes, but Carno netted twice late on to keep ‘bridge rooted to the foot of the table. Dyffryn Banw leap-frogged Newtown Reserves in the table after beating them 4-1 at home.
In a week when they saw a change of manager, Hay St Marys are through to the League Cup semi-finals after a 5-5 draw at Penparcau after extra time. Hay shaded it in the shoot-out winning 5-4.
In the Mid Wales League (South) six games beat the poor weather with Presteigne Reserves’ 6-1 home win over Newbridge Reserves lifting them a place to fifth.
The leaders Rhosgoch Rangers and second-placed Talgarth Town had an enforced day off, but the rest of the title contenders took the chance to close the gap.
Hay St Marys went second and closed the gap on Rhosgoch to three points when they beat visiting Rhayader Town Reserves by the odd goal in five, while Builth Wells are up to third courtesy of a narrow 1-0 win at Newcastle.
Llandrindod Wells remain firmly in the mix after their 6-0 win over CP Llanandras while Sennybridge were 3-2 victors in the mid-table game at Radnor Valley.
