A tough day on the road

Goals galore in our two matches over the weekend

Presteigne St Andrews FC and Presteigne Reserves were involved in high-scoring matches across the weekend of Friday, 26 and Saturday, 27 October.

The Reserves were first into the fray as they took on Llanidloes Town Reserves at Llanandras Park on Friday, 26 October.

On the face of it, this had the makings of a tough game as Llanidloes’ second string have been there or thereabouts in the Mid Wales League (South) title race in recent seasons.

But Alan Stocker’s side put recent disappointments firmly behind them in this one as they ran out 5-1 victors.

I don’t yet have any details on goalscorers but, as soon as I do, these will be added.

This was a a really good win by the Reserves and well done to everyone involved as, for a side that had gone seven games without a win, this was a pretty effective way of ending that run.

If that game was dramatic, then the first team was not to be outdone on Saturday, 27 October as they lost by the odd goal in 11 in their MMP with Norman Lloyd League second division game at Borth United.

The first half was not looking good for Shaun Harris’ side as they were 4-0 down at the interval.

Presteigne were two down after half-an-hour and then conceded a soft penalty – Borth then scored a fine goal to make it four at the interval.

This could easily have gone horribly wrong in the second half but, to their credit, the side rallied and Jordan Cooper netted soon after the break to give Presteigne some hope.

But Borth struck again and, at this point, it would have been easy for the first team to fold, but Tom Crichton scored to make it 5-2.

The drama continued as Jordan Cooper was brought down in the penalty and Curtis Williams stepped up to take the penalty – only for his shot to be saved.

Still Presteigne were creating chances with Borth now relying on trying to hit us on the break.

When Borth netted their sixth of the afternoon from a free kick, it really did look like ‘game over’ but Presteigne refused to lie down and they kept driving forward.

Tom Crichton’s pass picked out Duane Anning who made it 6-3 and still there was more drama to come as the Borth goalkeeper was red-carded.

Tom Lewis stepped up to score from the penalty spot for Presteigne to make it 6-4 (I know, it’s hard to follow all this..) and then Tom Crichton swooped to put Presteigne back to within a goal when he scored his second of the game.

In the end, Presteigne had left themselves just a bit too much to do but that is to take nothing away from what was a terrific second-half fightback.

Hopefully we’ll have some thoughts from both managers over the course of the next day or so.
