With only four points covering the top nine clubs in the Spar Mid Wales League the weekend’s fixtures, a number of games could have a major bearing on just who leads the pack come Saturday night.
Having said that, frontrunners Tywyn Bryncrug will be confident of maintaining pole position as they host struggling Llanfyllin Town – the visitors are fourth-bottom with only two league wins this season, although they are the division’s draw specialists having finished all square seven times.
Two of the top nine will meet at second-placed Bow Street where Llanrhaeadr will be the visitors while third-placed Rhayader will host Dolgellau. Llansantffraid Village’s fortunes have ebbed and flowed in the last fortnight – a 7-1 home defeat by Presteigne was followed by a 8-0 home win over Dolgellau – they will host Dyffryn Banw on Saturday.
Aberystwyth Reserves are still in the shake up and they will welcome Hay St Marys to Park Avenue whle Carno head to Waterloo Rovers. Across the town, Aberystwyth University will look to build on their excellent form at the expense of visiting Newtown Reserves.
Presteigne St Andrews will, of course, look to close the gap on that group of nine when they take on Penparcau in a game that has been switched to Llanandras Park.
Meanwhile, at the bottom, something has to give at Caersws Reserves where the second-bottom club will take on the only club below them in the divison – Newbridge.
In the Mid Wales League (South) it is going to be a very busy weekend for the majority of clubs as they will be playing on both Saturday and Sunday as the league looks to play catch up.
Presteigne Reserves will head to Penybont United on Saturday and will then host Sennybridge on Sunday. CP Llanandras have two home matches – they will take on Builth Wells on Saturday (kick off 1.45pm) while Penybont United travel to the John Beddoes School field on Sunday for a game that will double up as a Newcastle Cup tie..
Elsewhere on Saturday, Hay St Marys Reserves will look to take advantage of leaders Rhosgoch’s inactivity by beating visiting Newcastle. Were they to do so then they would go top.
Talgarth Town and Knighton Town will both look to keep up the pressure on the leaders as both have home games – Talgarth will host Radnor Valley while Rhayader Town Reserves head to Bryn-y-Castell. Builth Wednesdays will host the bottom club St Harmon.
The lure of the rugby looks especially strong at Sennybridge although, of course, there could be other reasons as to why their home game against Newbridge Reserves is due to kick off at 1.00pm.
