Double disappointment as both sides lose

Defeat in a derby-day goalfest
Presteigne put Newcastle under pressure at Llanandras Park

Saturday, 22 January 2022 will not go down as one of the finest days in the history of Presteigne St Andrews FC as both sides were beaten in their respective Mid Wales League (South) fixtures.

Presteigne hosted Newcastle at Llanandras Park and they will surely have been left wondering how they didn’t take something from this one.

John Haycox’s side created four or five clear cut chances in the first half, but a combination of some fine defending by Newcastle and the woodwork ensured the sides went in goal-less at the break.

The second half could not have started better for Presteigne  – two minutes in and a good move down the left-hand side ended with a cross to the far post where an unmarked Jake Fox volleyed the home side into the lead.

But this served to stir Newcastle into action and they soon drew level with a scrappy close-range effort before taking the lead in similar style.

The south Shropshire side wrapped up the points in the final minute of added time when a free kick in from the right-hand side ended with the visitors bundling the ball home from close range to close out a 3-1 victory.

CP Llanandras paid the price for a disappointing first-half as they went down 5-0 in their match at Felindre.

Bryn Roberts’ side trailed 4-0 at the break and, while the second half saw them produce a much-improved performance, clearly the damage had been done by that stage as the home side eased to a comfortable victory.
