There were only two matches in the Spar Mid Wales League this weekend as the Central Wales Cup was taking centre stage.
Rhayader Town missed out on the chance to go top as they were beaten 3-2 at Penparcau, whose victory takes them up to fifth place in the league table.
Elsewhere, well all good things have to come to an end and this was the case for Aberystwyth University whose seven-game winning streak in the league hit the buffers at home to Dyffryn Banw who headed home from the seaside with a 2-1 win.
In addition to Presteigne’s win over Technogroup Welshpool Town, Hay St Marys are through after a 1-0 home win over Carno. Dolgellau were on the wrong end of a giantkilling – Tregaron Turfs added to Dolgellau’s current woes by beating them 3-1.
Elsewhere, Cymru Alliance club Berriew just shaded it at home to Newtown Reserves, winning 1-0, but it was to be the end of the road for Talgarth Town who went down 4-0 at Bow Street.
Llandrindod Wells put up a good showing before going down 6-4 at Aberystwyth Reserves, while Newbridge were beaten 3-1 at Guilsfield. Llanrhaeadr needed penalties to ease past Cardigan Town after the game finished goal-less.
Tywyn Bryncrug saw off Llanfyllin Town 5-0, while Waterloo Rovers ares also through after they saw off visiting Aberaeron by five goals to three. Llansantffraid Village were 4-2 winners at New Quay.
In the Mid Wales League (South), those sides at the top continue to march on – nowhere more so than at Penybont Athletic where the leaders Builth Wells hammered the home side 9-0. Rhosgoch Rangers were another side to do its goal difference no harm at all by beating visiting Hay St Marys Reserves 7-0.
Presteigne Reserves stay in touch after that 3-0 victory at Knighton Town, but CP Llanandras’ home defeat by Talgarth Rovers keeps them looking over their shoulders towards the foot of the table, not least because Newbridge Reserves picked up a useful point in a 1-1 home draw with Newcastle – a result that moves them above CP Llanandras in the league table ahead of next week’s meeting between the clubs at the John Beddoes School field.
Builth Wednesdays just shaded their home match with Sennybridge winning 1-0, while Radnor Valley put last weekend’s miseries firmly behind them with a 3-0 home victory over the bottom side St Harmon. In the day’s other game, Penybont United were 3-0 winners at Llandrindod Wells Colts.
