Sadly, Presteigne St Andrews FC’s first league trip to Llanilar proved something of a chastening experience as we were seriously on the wrong end of a heavy defeat.
Take nothing away from Llanilar, though, all the indications are they looked a very useful side as they eased to an eight-one opening-day victory.
18-year old Llanilar youngster Osian Simpson-Jones was the star of the show in this one as he scored four times.
Promoted from the Aberystwyth and District League at the end of last season, Llanilar proved too good on the day with Ioan Jones netting a brace, while Jamie Stuart and Keiron Reynolds were also on target.
After falling behind early on, a strike from Jamie Blyth had put Presteigne on level terms and they would have been hopeful of taking something from the game at the point.
But clearly that wasn’t to be the case, although there were some mitigating circumstances with a number of players away or unavailable at the weekend.
Manager Corin Jones will be looking for a positive response from his squad on Friday, 12 August when Presteigne St Andrews FC will open their home league programme with a game against Talgarth Town at Llanandras Park.
The kick off for that one will be at 7.30pm and all spectators would be welcome.
The tea hut and bar will be open and admission prices for home games are £3.00 for adults; £1.50 for senior citizens and £1.00 for youngsters under the age of 16.
