Round up of the weekend action

Rhayader Town remain right in the Spar League title race
Rhayader Town remain right in the Spar League title race

The Spar Mid Wales League title race looks as though it is going to go down to the wire with leaders Penparcau and second-placed Rhayader Town locked together on 66 points at the top of the division.

Penparcau went to Newbridge and came away with a 2-0 victory while Rhayader Town kept up the pressure with a 2-1 win in what looked to a be a tough game at Llanrhaeadr.

Bow Street are in third place after a 1-0 win at Newtown Reserves – they are six points back, but have played two games fewer than Penparcau and three than Rhayader.

The only other club in with a shout of the title – and even that is a long shot – is Aberystwyth Reserves who were 3-0 home winners over Waterloo Rovers.   Aber are fourth, level on points with Bow Street.

Carno put their recent indifferent form behind them by beating visiting Dolgellau 4-0 while Aberystwyth University came away from bottom side Llanfyllin Town with a 3-0 victory.

Presteigne St Andrews’ Friday-night win over Llansantffraid Village leaves them in eighth place in the table, but took them to within a point of seventh-placed Tywyn Bryncrug who didn’t play this weekend.

It was to be a disappointing weekend all round for Hay St Marys – on Saturday they were well beaten 4-1 at Dyffryn Banw while they then bowed out of the Otway Cup at Llanandras Park on Sunday.

There were not too many games in the Mid Wales League (South) over the weekend but Builth Wells kept up the pressure on the top with a 4-0 home win over Radnor Valley in the only  match played on Saturday 25 April.

The Friday night matches saw Hay St Marys Reserves beat visiting Llandrindod Wells Colts 2-0 and so added to the Colts recent poor run, while Knighton Town came away from The Weirglodd with a 1-0 victory over Rhayader Town Reserves.

The Sunday action saw CP Llanandras pick up a decent point in a 0-0 draw at Sennybridge.

Meanwhile, league secretary Paul Worts has confirmed the Pip Samuel (Electrical) Mid Wales (South) League Cup Final between Builth Wells and Llandrindod Wells will be played at The Weirglodd, Rhayader on Monday 3 May (kick off 2.30pm).
