Congratulations to both the first team and the reserves who won their respective cup finals on what was to prove a highly productive Sunday for the club.
At Llanandras Park a makeshift first team battled out a goal-less draw with Newbridge over 120 minutes of football in which both sides had their moments, with the better efforts going the way of the home side.
Gareth Watkins probably had the best effort of the game when he hit a terrific dipping drive the rattled the cross bar while the visiting goalkeeper Glen Huntley had a day to remember with a string of fine saves – one from a fierce long-range effort from Luke Boundford especially stood out.
So it came down to a penalty shoot-out and ultimately Presteigne prevailed coming through 4-3 to win the Otway Cup and avenge in some part the heavy defeat by Newbridge in last season’s final.
Meanwhile the Reserves also had to field a much-changed side for their Radnor Valley Cup final as a number of Barry Williams’ regulars have played too many first-team appearances. Danny Ives played in goal while Trevor Gummer showcased his hitherto hidden outfield talents on the left wing.
Tom Watkins was the man of the moment – he netted a hat-trick while Nigel Duggan was also on target as the Reserves ran out 4-0 winners.
Well done to both sides – more detailed match reports will appear on the team’s respective pages of the site at some stage on Monday 10 May.
