Congratulations to Barry Williams and his Reserves squad who picked up their second trophy of the season when they beat Hay St Marys Reserves 2-1 in the Alfred Sparey Cup final at Llanandras Park on Sunday 16 May.
After an even first half, Presteigne took the lead when Callum Matthews finished really well from the tightest of angles five minutes before the interval.
The Reserves doubled their lead early in the second period when Hay failed to clear a ball and Tom Watkins reacted smartly inside the area to spin and then fire home past the visiting keeper Steve Price.
Hay gave themselves hope of taking the game to extra time when Steve Jones turned the ball home at the near post following a corner but Presteigne Reserves held out for a fine win in what was an entertaining game.
Callum Matthews was named man of the match by Ron Sparey who was presenting the trophy on behalf of his family.
Steve Kay and Alan Stocker jointly received the cup and it was promising to be a late night for many of the squad – not least because they had reportedly all agreed to have a quiet night in on Saturday evening so as to give themselves every chance in Sunday’s game.
There is a more detailed report up on the Reserves page of the site but many congratulations again to the Reserves on adding the Sparey Cup to the Radnor Valley Cup they won last weekend.
They are still in with a chance of making it three cups for the season as they have a Penybont Cup semi-final still to come.
The Reserves will next be in action on Tuesday 18 May when they will make the trip to Rhosgoch Rangers in the Mid Wales League (South)(kick off 6.45pm) before rounding off their season on Saturday 22 May with a home game against Knighton Town.
