Presteigne St Andrews opened their pre-season friendly campaign with a highly encouraging 4-2 win over a strong Leominster Town side at Bridge Street.

Presteigne boss Barry Williams included only two members of last season’s first-team squad – Luke Boundford and Max Powell – and so was delighted with the side’s showing.

“To be honest this was a really good effort against what was a strong Leominster side,” said Barry.

“They looked really good for the first 20 minutes or so and I have to admit I was a bit worried at that point.

“But we settled down after that point and played some really good stuff,” he added.

Presteigne went 1-0 up when Luke Boundford’s cross was punched out by the Leominster goalkeeper only for the ball to cannon off his own defender and into the home team’s net.

Leominster levelled only for Mark Weiland to put Presteigne back in front while Tom Watkins then made it 3-1.

Leominster again scored to put themselves back in the game while Trevor Gummer saved a penalty to help preserve Presteigne’s advantage.

Danny Ives ensured Barry’s side had the final say when he scored from the penalty spot in the final minute to wrap up a 4-2 victory.

A more detailed report will appear on the first team page of the site as soon as the information arrives with me – if you were there and happened to take a photo or two, then please email them to me and I will incorporate them into the match report.
