Paul Roberts

Presteigne St Andrews FCMy thanks to George Lancett for bringing to my attention the very sad news that former Presteigne St Andrews player Paul Roberts died following an accident near Shrewsbury last week – he was 48.

‘Robbo’ played for us in the late 1980s and was in the team that won the Kington Challenge Cup for the first time in April 1988.

His team-mates were: Ed Traylor; N. Breeze; Billy Jones; Mark Stevens; Tony Bothwell; K. Jones; Clive Field; T. Marston; T. Meyler; Shaun Mather;  Subs: Teddy Bennett and S. Greenfield.

Other players that season were Keith Lister, Mark Tench, Mazzy Morris, John Ellison and Geraint Whiffen while the manager was Doug Taylor.

George says a number of longer-serving supporters of the club will have very fond memories of Paul Roberts.

“‘Robbo’ was a good player on and off the pitch and he was very popular with the supporters,” he said.

“He once hitchhiked from Shrewsbury to Presteigne having missed his lift and still made the subs’ bench!” he added.

His funeral will take place at Holy Trinity Church, Belle Vue in Shrewsbury at 1.00pm on Thursday 22 July and the family has requested that bright colours be worn.
