Presteigne St Andrews’ striker Callum Matthews is to undergo surgery on the arm injury he sustained during the home defeat by Ewyas Harold in the pre-season friendly.

The game was held up for around 25 minutes while paramedics treated Callum on the pitch and Barry reports the initial fears were proved to be well founded.

“I am afraid it is not good news as Callum has to go back to hospital tomorrow (Saturday) to have an operation,” he said.

“Apparently they are going to have to put three pins in his arm and so he is likely to be out for at least eight weeks.

“Overall, it wasn’t a great night for us as Luke [Boundford] also told us last night he will be signing for Newbridge this season.

“However, it wasn’t all bad as we did get Max Powell to put pen to paper so he has signed for us for the coming season,” he added.

Overall, Barry was quite heartened by the performance against Ewyas Harold although he freely admits events involving Callum Matthews overshadowed the rest of the evening.

“I thought we played a lot better than we did on Saturday and, although we lost, it was a much better all round team performance,” he said.

Barry faces being without five of the squad that played on Wednesday evening when he sends out a side to play against Lads Club on Saturday 7 August (kick off 2.00pm).

In addition to Callum Matthews and Luke Boundford, Jonny Bird, Tom Watkins and Jack Bowen are all unavailable.

A reminder that the Reserves are due to take on Lads Club Reserves immediately after the first-team fixure on Saturday afternoon, so there will be a double-header of football for your delectation and delight at Llanandras Park.
