Presteigne St Andrews made a disappointing start to their Spar Mid Wales League first division season as they were well beaten 5-1 at Builth Wells.

With a number of players unavailable due to work commitments, manager Barry Williams always knew this could prove a difficult evening at Lant Field, and his preparations were further hampered when Danny Ives reportedly tweaked a hamstring during the warm up and so could only take his place among the substitutes.

Builth led 2-0 at the interval in which they profited from a defensive error for their first goal and then netted a second following a well-worked move.

Presteigne felt they had good shouts for a penalty turned down early in the second half, but the officials adjudged the foul had taken place just outside the penalty area and so they had to make do with a free kick.

Jonny Bird then pulled a goal back for Presteigne after around 65 minutes as Barry’s side produced its best form of the game in the period immediately after the break.

But the home side then netted a third courtesy of a breakaway goal and it was always going to be a long way back from this point.

With Presteigne pressing for the goal they needed to get back into the game they were to concede twice more in the final 10 minutes of the game as Builth ran out convincing winners, although there was a view that while they deserved their victory, 5-1 flattered them to a degree.

It is hoped to have a more detailed match report up on the first team page of the site at some stage on Thursday 19 August.
