Round up of the weekend action

Presteigne St Andrews FCWith the majority of Spar League clubs in FAW Trophy first-round action over the weekend there wre only five league games on which to report.

Defending champions Penparcau finally got the defence of their title off and running at the third time of asking but they were clearly made to work very hard for it  before coming away from Dyffryn Banw with a 3-2 victory.

Builth Wells appear to have settled in well to life in the first division as they followed up their win over Presteigne St Andrews with a 3-0 home success over Dolgellau.

In the second division of the Spar League Abermule were the big winners of the day – they hammered visiting Meifod 6-0 while there were also victories for Kerry and Talgarth Town.

Kerry were 3-2 winners in their home match against Llanfair United while Talgarth picked up the points in their home game against Four Crosses courtesy of a 2-1 victory.

Aside from Presteigne St Andrews’ defeat at Pennar Robins, there wasn’t a lot of joy for Spar Mid Wales League clubs in the FAW Trophy first round.    Credit to Llandrindod Wells – they are through after a 1-0 win over Codaxton at the Broadway, while Berriew won the all-Spar League meeting with Bow Street coming through 2-0 to maintain their good start to the season.

Montgomery Town also progressed as they came through 4-2 in their tie at Llanystumdwy.

Tywyn Bryncrug contrived to score five goals away from home at Acrefair Youth FC – but still lost by the odd goal in 11.  Rhosgoch Rangers found visiting Gresford too strong as the visitors headed home with a 7-1 victory.

There were away defeats for Llanrhaeadr – 3-2 at Bodedern Athletic – and Tregaron Turfs, who went down 3-0 at Overton.   Llanfyllin Town ran out of steam in extra time in their game at Llandyrnog United who came through 5-1 after the 120 minutes.

As convincing a win as Abermule’s was in the Spar League second division, they fell well short of being the weekend’s leading scorers – that honour went to Rhayader Town Reserves in the Mid Wales League (South) who went to St Harmon and hammered the Swifts 14-0 in their derby game.

Hay St Marys were also in decent form in front of goal – they beat visiting Newbridge Reserves 8-1 at Forest Road but it was Radnor Valley who could probably lay claim to the shock result of the day when they beat visiting Talgarth Town Reserves 2-1.
