Presteigne St Andrews Under 18s squad got off to a winning start as they beat visiting Leominster Minors 2-1 at Llanandras Park on Monday 20 September.

Manager Trevor Gummer admitted his side had not got off to the best of starts in the game, but despite this they went in front after around 10 minutes.

“We had a corner that was played into the near post and Connor Bird got in there to put us in front,” said Trevor.

“We could have been in a better position as we had other chances with Connor having a couple of one-on-ones but their keeper did well.

“But we doubled the lead on the half-hour mark – again, from a corner when the ball fell to Danny Ives inside the area and he drove the ball into the back of the net,” he added.

The second half saw Leominster Minors opt for the long-ball tactic, but Presteigne stood firm until the hour-mark when the visitors reduced arrears.

Another long ball forward led to a certain amount of consternation in the home-team back four but even then the goal had a certain amount of good fortune about it as the shot took a deflection on its way into the Presteigne net.

Having lost their shape for the early periods of the second half, Presteigne got it back together and finished the game strongly.

“We looked good over the closing stages and might have extended the lead when Max Lewis hit the bar with a decent shot,” he said.

“Adam Farmer was outstanding at the heart of the defence while Danny Ives also had a good game.

“This was a decent start for us and we have to be looking to build on that in the coming weeks.”
