You could not blame the Under 18s’ front man Callum Matthews for thinking this was the case after an extraordinary HFA Floodlit Youth League game at Leominster on Monday 5 October.
Callum scored no fewer than four times for Trevor Gummer’s side, and yet he still ended up on the losing side as Presteigne went down 7-4.
Leominster netted twice with two fine strikes early on before Callum put Presteigne back into the game, only for the home side to regain their two-goal lead shortly before the interval.
Trevor said the team had been slow out of the blocks in the first half, but were far better after the break when Callum netted twice to complete his hat-trick in levelling the game at 3-3. He almost netted his fourth when the ball was cleared off the line, only for Leominster to immediately break up the other end and score themselves for 4-3.
In a breathtaking game, Leominster then netted three more times in a 15-minute spell to effectively put the game to bed, only for Callum to then have the last say in scoring his fourth with five minutes remaining.
It might have been even better for the striker who would have enjoyed what manager Trevor described as his ‘Gazza moment’ right at the death when he flicked the ball over a defender’s head inside the area and fired in a shot only to have it kicked off the line by a retreating Leominster player.
Trevor and his assistant Adam Jones had the abacus out to keep up with the score in what was a remarkable game. Assuming they get their breath back, and get a few thoughts down on paper, there will be a more detailed report on the Under 18s page at some stage on Tuesday.
