Round up of the weekend action

Presteigne St Andrews FCThe Central Wales Cup fourth round meant that there were not too many Spar Mid Wales League matches, with only three in the top flight and four in division two.

In addition to Presteigne St Andrews’ 7-1 defeat at Llanidloes Town, there were victories for Carno and Aberystwyth University.

Carno went to Dolgellau where they proved too strong for the home side as they ran out 3-0 victors while the students scored the only goal of the game as they recorded an impressive 1-0 win at Tywyn Bryncrug.

Carno’s win takes them up to third – one of three clubs on 29 points and they move above fourth-placed Llansantffraid Village by dent of having scored more goals – the sides are level on points and have an identical goal difference.

Llanidloes Town are up to sixth in the table – they are six points behind Newbridge in fifth, but they do have the small matter of five games in hand.   Aberystwyth University’s win at Tywyn Bryncrug sees them climb a place to tenth.

In division two, Kerry were the only side in the top four in action and they missed out on the chance to go level on points with leaders Tregaron Turfs when they were held 1-1 at home by Aberaeron who climb out of the bottom two places on goal difference.

They are replaced there by Talgarth Town who were beaten 3-1 at Bont, while Llandrindod Wells were also 3-1 winners – in their case at Llanfair United.   That result sees Spa climb above their hosts on goal difference to ninth in the 13-strong division.

The day’s other  game was a mid-table affair in which Abermule came out on top in their home game against Llanfyllin Town by three goals to two.

In the Mid Wales League (South), it’s as you were at the top with the leading two sides both winning their matches.

Rhayader Town Reserves remain eight points clear at the top and maintain their 100 percent league record as they recorded their 16th straight league win – this time, 4-0 at Sennybridge.

Newcastle did their level best to stay in touch with Rhayader with their 3-1 win over Presteigne Reserves at Llanandras Park, while fourth hosted third – but not in the league.    Talgarth Town Reserves entertained Knighton Town in their much-delayed Emrys Morgan Cup tie with Talgarth coming through in a penalty shoot-out after a 0-0 draw.

The big winners of the day were Newbridge Reserves who hammered visiting Hay St Marys 11-2, while the day’s other game saw Bronllys pick up their fifth league point of the season as they battled out a 1-1 draw with visiting Knighton Victoria.
