While Presteigne St Andrews were busy putting an end to Waterloo Rovers’ unbeaten record in the Spar Mid Wales League, the remaining clubs in the division were sorting out just which of them would contest the quarter-finals of the League Cup.
Dyffryn Banw’s reward for their excellent 2-0 League Cup away win at Aberystwyth Reserves is a tricky quarter-final trip to Rhayader Town, who came through after an extraordinary match at Aberystwyth University. That game finished 5-5 after extra time, but Rhayader prevailed in the penalty shoot-out.
Carno came up with one of the results of the weekend when they were 1-0 victors at Llanrhaeadr, and they will host in-form Llansantfraidd Village in the last eight after the villagers eased past Caersws Reserves with a 4-0 home win.
Penparcau – conquerors of Presteigne St Andrews in the preliminary round – proved far too strong for Newtown Reserves, as they ran out 4-0 winners in that one and they will now host Hay St Marys in the quarter-finals after Hay came away from Dolgellau with a 3-2 success.
The final quarter-final is still something of a grey area – there will be some sympathy for Bow Street’s view that they should get a bye against Llanfyllin Town after thir visitors failed to raise a side for the trip to Ceredigion, but this is yet to be confirmed by the powers-that-be. So Tywyn Bryncrug will have to wait for their quarter-final destination to be confirmed after the Seasiders beat Newbridge 4-1 at home.
It is reported that Rhayader Town’s scheduled Spar Mid Wales League match against Aberystwyth University on Tuesday 3 November has been called off.
In the Mid Wales League (South) Presteigne Reserves had a good weekend – not only did they win 3-2 at Sennybridge, but the Friday night match between the two clubs above them in the table finished all square when Llandrindod Wells and Rhosgoch drew 0-0 in Llan’dod.
Most of the other leading sides maintained the pressure on the top two – Talgarth Town served further notice of their intentions this season with a 6-0 home win over Penybont Athletic while Builth Wells came away from Knighton Town with a 3-1 win. Hay St Marys Reserves were 3-2 winners at Penybont United.
There were also wins for Talgarth Rovers – 3-0 at Builth Wednesdays – and Newcastle, who turned over the bottom side St Harmon 4-0 in south Shropshire.
Newbridge Reserves produced what was probably the shock result of the weekend when they went Llandrindod Colts and came away with a 3-1 success. This win lifts them above CP Llanandras at the foot of the table as Llanandras went down 4-1 at home to Rhayader Town Reserves, but St Harmon still prop up the division.
