With none of the top three sides in action at the weekend, due to Rhayader’s scheduled match at Dolgellau falling foul of a waterlogged pitch, there was little change at the top of the Spar Mid Wales League.
Aberystwyth Reserves have a chance to increase their league this evening when they entertain the students of UCW in a derby game, but they will be mindful that the students finally broke their winning duck on Saturday when they buried Caersws Reserves 6-0. That win was enough to lift the College off the foot of the table on goal difference as they climbed above Newbridge.
The villagers were beaten 5-1 at Carno and have now lost 12 games from 14 so clearly manager Adriano Girolami has his work cut out if he is to keep them in the division for next season.
At the top, Penparcau and Tywyn Bryncrug both had chances to close the gap on the leaders, but both were held to 2-2 away draws – Penparcau at the league’s draw specialists Llanfyllin Town, and Tywyn at Llanrhaeadr. Llanfyllin have now drawn six of their 12 league matches.
Hay St Marys are handily placed – they beat Waterloo Rovers 2-1 to go seventh with games in hand on all the clubs above them while in the day’s other game, Dyffryn Banw came away from Bow Street with an impressive 2-1 victory.
In the Mid Wales League (South) Llandrindod Wells put down a marker when beating Talgarth Town 5-1 at The Broadway to go four points clear at the top, while Hay St Marys Reserves were convincing 7-3 home winners over Sennybridge. Radnor Valley beat CP Llanandras 4-1 to put clear blue water between themselves and the foot of the table.
In the Emrys Morgan Cup second round, in addition to Presteigne Reserves’ win at Knighton, Rhayader Reserves beat St Harmon 5-3 at the Weirglodd, while Rhosgoch Rangers were on the wrong end of a 5-1 result at Tregaron Turfs.
Newcastle also bowed out – they went down 3-1 at Llanfechain, but the other matches involving Mid Wales League (South) clubs were postponed.
